Understanding and Responding to Coercive Control – Community Legal Centres Queensland
29 June 2022 @ 12:00 pm – 1:00 pm
This webinar, presented by Julie Sarkozi, Practice Director, Law Reform and Education and Counselling Notes Protect Lawyer at Women’s Legal Service Queensland (WLSQ), will outline the learnings from WLSQ’s research and evaluation project in partnership with North Queensland Women’s Legal Service (NQWLS), funded by the legal assistance services program.
This project provides guidance for CLCs working with people who might experience coercive control in domestic and family violence matters, how to identify coercive control, and options for responding and women being misidentified as aggressors, which aims to assist CLCs to better understand and respond to matters involving coercive control. The webinar will cover:
- Learnings from Queensland women with lived experience of coercive control, including those who had been misidentified as primary aggressors, about what CLCs could do to elicit full disclosure of their circumstances and support them in safely arguing their case when they self-represent;
- Learning from the literature and from CLCs in other jurisdictions what the impact, demand and practice has been in relation to ‘coercive control’ and what guidance they would offer to systems considering the paths;
- The ‘Hear Her Voice’ report from the Women’s Safety and Justice Taskforce (Nov 2021) recommends for the criminalisation of coercive control.
