-------------------------------------------------------

As the year comes to a close, we hope that you will join us for this special occasion to celebrate the year that has been. Especially, as this is the year we celebrate our 10th anniversary. This is a significant milestone for the USQLS and one we are very proud of achieving. This will be a wonderful opportunity for all of us to come together and acknowledge our amazing journey and growth as a society. It will be a wonderful night that will bring together students, alumni, USQ faculty, legal practitioners, distinguished guests, family and friends.

A traditional and key part of this evening is that this is where we will congratulate and welcome the incoming (2019) USQLS Executive Committee to their new positions, and we will officially commence our handover.

On the night, you will also have the pleasure of hearing from special guest speakers (yet to be announced) as well as the USQLS Executive Committee. Importantly, you will hear about our experiences this year and the many great things we have been involved in and been able to achieve.

We have come a long way since our inception in 2008 by a handful of passionate and driven law students. Our steady membership growth, increased commitments and contributions to the student community is evidence of that.

As a team, we aim to consistently support, to the best of our abilities, the interests of our student cohort. Our team is full of motivation, spark, ideas, innovation, and dedication. We are always striving to improve.

The work and commitment students have dedicated to our organisation over the years is both commendable and incredible. Their efforts have provided solid foundations upon which we look forward to continuing to build a bright future. This is an exciting time to be a part of, and involved with, the USQLS.

-------------------------------------------------------

THEME
Our theme for the event is black & white. Please be assured this does not strictly apply to what people wear. The theme is very much related to how the event will be designed and decorated. You are welcome to take part in the theme and dress accordingly if you wish.

2018 USQLS FIRST YEAR MOOT COMPETITION

Welcome to the USQLS First Year Moot Competition. Mooting is a widely renowned form of competition amongst legal students throughout the globe. The skills needed to be successful in such a competition are designed to mimic those of real world legal advocates. Not only must a competitor be confident speaking in a forum which scrutinises their argument but must also have confidence in their understanding of the law they are arguing. Team work is also an essential element to competing because, much like in the real world, legal professionals often rely on their co-counsel to help build their case against the opposing side. This competition provides valuable experience to newly enrolled law students who are keen to hone such skills in a professional setting.

The USQLS First Year Moot Competition is designed for students who enrolled in 2018 and have not yet completed 8 courses (law) and is run separately over both campuses. It is comprised of a maximum of eight (8) teams on each campus with each team consisting of two (2) counsel. The competition will be held over a single day at the Wonderley & Hall Moot Court on the Toowoomba Campus and the Moot Court on the Springfield Campus. The dates are Toowoomba Campus - Saturday 15th September; Springfield Campus - Saturday 22nd September

Each team will compete twice – representing both sides. The winner is decided on the overall cumulative results from both moots. The winning team from each campus will compete against each other in a Grand Final to be held at the Ipswich Court House. The winners will receive highly-coveted work experience at local law firms.

Registration will be open until Friday 31st August  or when the eight (8) positions are filled – whichever comes first. This year the question comes from Criminal Law and will be released on Saturday 11th of August.
